Disarray, 2018
VR experience for HTC Vive
The work “disarray” is a multiversal labyrinth of collective events, which seems to be characterized by repetition yet is distinguished by its narrative content and the emerging structure through user interaction. With each connection and leap into a subsequent multiverse, each user sets forth on their own (narrative) odyssey on rough sea.
Due to the current technological progress and the associated spread of mass media, today one is constantly exposed to the rapidly growing flood of information. The heavier the tides rise, the more you seal yourself off with carefully collected pieces of information. Cultures, communities and individuals surround themselves in echo bubbles that conform to their world view and increasingly harden when the mass of information oppress their perspective. Fearing that their constructed worldview will be destroyed, any influence that does not correspond to the fragmented interpretation is censored. "We are blurring out of reality", facts are subordinated, comfort is a priority. With the work “disarray”, the user is thrown between a state of excess and one of isolation to infuse its already manifested echo bubble of comfort with creeping content that alters already fixed narrative constructs of known information. The interaction progresses the bubble and constructs it toward 3 basic building blocks of a story narratives: figure, transformation, diegeses. With each stroke a visible net of past decision that obstructs further moves is constructed until a deadlock leaves the user in a non stopping flood of escalating information. By constantly switching between interaction, observation and the totality of influences, the reflex of building a coherent narrative between the content is stimulated to further distort information structures forming an ever deeper reaching spiral.
Consume - forget - consume - forget: wash, rinse, repeat.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Shahab Nedaei, born 1988 in Tehran, is an Vienna-based digital artist. His work is rooted in the simultaneous and synonymous equality of information - the internet. Forced to seek refuge in Austria in his young years, the virtual space served as a sanctuary in which his life mainly took place, becoming chosen culture. Throughout his studies of Digital Arts at the University for Applied Arts in Vienna, he experimented with the synergies of multiple digital media forms and the interspace resulting from the coalesce of cultures and social paradigmas, which emerge from the world wide web. This state of mind also reflects in his current practice. His concepts include ambiguous approaches, leaving heterogeneous spaces for deeper individual understanding that create new perspectives on known matter, media and technology. With each new project he confronts new technological, conceptual and philosophical hurdles, dissolving boundaries and nurturing a vast growing multitude of perspective angles.
